The consortium:

The DEN4DEK thematic network is composed of 19 partners, from 10 different Member States, involving directly 17 European regions.

The DEN4DEK Partners are also members of the Regions for Digital Ecosystems Network (REDEN). Additionally, most DEN4DEK partners have the mandate to implement action for their innovation strategies at the regional level.

The Consortium also includes 7 Members of the Living Labs community.

Project Co-ordinator

TECHIDEAS is the network co-ordinator of DEN4DEK. TECHIDEAS was responsible for the implementation of the Digital Business Ecosystems platform (DBE project) and it is one of the key stakeholders responsible for the inception of the DE paradigm and technology in the last few years.

Founded in 2003, TECHIDEAS is a young and dynamic high-TI Spanish SME in the ICT sector whose mission is to help other companies innovative. The main goal of TECHIDEAS is to provide state-of-the-art solutions to its customers, designing products and services, and aiming to play the role of their R+D Department. The main research areas of the company are: integration of distributed systems, with Java Technology, mainly Open Source; and development of advance software products intended for mobility.

Instituto Tecnologico de Aragon

ITA is a key instrument of the innovation strategy of the Government of Aragon. ITA has participated in the DBE project as one of the Regional Catalysts. The main objective of the regional involvement into the DBE has been to engage a large number of local SMEs and to make them adopt and use the DBE technical solution in their businesses at different levels.

ITA has deep experience in dissemination activities explaining both how to start a region in the DE and, in explaining technical key concepts in order to accelerate the learning curve of the participants.

ITA directly represents the Aragon region in DEN4DEK, but also the Government, the University of Zaragoza, SW Developer SMEs and User SMEs are involved to share their knowledge in favour of the deployment of the Digital Ecosystems.

Regione Lazio

Resulting from its development of participation activities, Regione Lazio has introduced the ‘iLazio2010’ strategic plan. The key action of this strategy is networking all the citizens and developing a networked society based on the communication interconnection, where everyone is networked and has equal opportunities to access and produce services. Digital Ecosystems are formally part of this strategy.

Regione Lazio can share its experience with the participants of DEN4DEK in how to set up a methodology able to introduce the Digital Ecosystem in their local communities.

Birmingham City University

In the United Kingdom, Birmingham City University (formerly University of Central England) Business School undertakes a high volume of research and business support activities and was involved as a Regional Catalyst and technology developer in the DBE project. The activities are co-ordinated by three research groups: Innovation and Enterprise Research Groups, Knowledge and Technology Research Group, and Management Learning and Reflective Practice Research Groups.

T6 Ecosystems S.r.l.

T6 Ecosystems S.r.l. is a research and consulting organisation in the area of IT innovation and strategies for local economic development. T6 ECO has long experience in working with OSS Communities supporting the creation of business models for brand new IT applications. T6 ECO main activities are: consulting to public and private enterprises regarding innovation of process and use of ICT technologies; IT research on Digital Ecosystems; Technology transfer and business support for IT access for SMEs; E-Government; and large training events.

Dirección General de Modernización (Generalitat de la Comunitat Valenciana)

The main task of the Dirección General de Modernización is, as foreseen in the multi-annual strategic AVANTIC 2004-2010 planning, managing, promoting and executing of the policies of the Valencia regional government in the field of the modernisation of the region, and the Public Administration, through advanced telecommunications and towards the knowledge and technological society, promoting the efficient use of ICT by citizens and business (SMEs mainly). These tasks are carried out, as well, by promoting and participating in ICT projects at regional, national, European and international level.

Istituto sui Trasporti e la Logistica Fondazione

The foundation ‘Istituto sui Transporti e la Logistica’ was founded in 2003 by a regional law of the Emilia-Romagna Region as a supporting, non-profit organisation, operating in the transport and logistics field. Although the ITL focus is in improving logistics in the Emilia-Romagna region, since the beginning of its operation ITL is participating to a wide range of international RTD and technology transfer initiatives, to compare the local experience and policy with similar situations in other regional contexts and to ensure the provision of state-of-the-art services to its local audience.

ITL is a member of the European Network of Living Labs.

National University of Ireland, Maynooth

Within the National University of Ireland Maynooth, the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) was established as a University Institute in January 2001. NIRSA’s remit is to undertake fundamental, applied and comparative research on spatial processes and their effects on social and economic development in Ireland.

NUIM will act as the initial facilitator for Ireland in DEN4DEK, and will be strongly supported by the Mid East Regional Authority and the Dublin Regional Authority.

Technicka univerzita v Kosiciach

The Technical University of Kosice (TUKE) was established in 1952. TUKE’s expertise related to Digital Ecosystems includes networking companies (also technically), e-business and knowledge management, feasibility study development, e-learning courses in the field of e-business and innovation management, Living Lab ACEM focused on managerial simulation and e-sourcing and e-procurement on real applications, socio-economic analysis of ICT impact, trust marks and interconnection between academic and industrial environments in the ICT field.

TUKE has participated in projects such as the SEAMLESS project (FP6 IST STREP) that is part of the DBE projects cluster. TUKE, the Industry and the corresponding state and regional authorities cooperate mutually in the field of regional development.

Fachhochschule Vorarlberg GmbH

The University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg has a proven track record in creating solutions with over 100 companies and organisations worldwide and in acquiring extensive funding and grants. The FHV cooperates with Industry in pre-competitive and competitive research in order to come up with innovative solutions in the area of applied research. As a university of applied sciences, FHV is focused on working together with business and industry in ventures for bi-lateral profit. In its joint ventures with business and industry the FHV has channelled its resources into three strategic areas: Micro technology; User-centred technologies; and Product and process engineering.

FHV is currently involved in three Living Lab related projects: CoreLabs, CoreLabs CA and Living Lab Vorarlberg.

Helsinki School of Economics (Helsingin kauppakorkeakoulu)

The Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) at the Helsinki School of Economics is an international multidisciplinary research centre. CKIR promotes knowledge and innovation-based renewal and growth of companies and societies, locally and globally. The research at CKIR has three initial focus areas: Global Competitiveness through Creativity and Innovation; Human-Centred and User-Experience-based Media and Communication Technology; and New Industry Creation and Private-Public-Partnership-projects in Living Lab environments.

CKIR and Region Aboland are working closely together to launching and developing a Living Lab to support rural and regional development, service and business creation, and enhance the attractiveness of the region for SMEs and mobile citizens. Within C@R (Collaboration at Rural Project), HSE-CKIR has also a role of monitoring all seven Living Labs participating in the Project as rural innovation systems.

University of Szeged

The University of Szeged (USZ) was formed by the integration of the higher education institutions of Szeged and Hódmezovárhely and launched its R&D activities in 2000. USZ is considered to be the university with the highest scientific potential in Hungary. USZ established its Directorate of Innovation in 2003. Since then, it is responsible for operating an institutional system of innovation, creating a basis for technology transfer and placing the university into the international circulation of innovation.

The Department of Software Engineering (DSE) within USZ currently participates in an EU funded project: the Collaboration@Rural Integrated Project, where it is developing a collaborative platform for working and living in rural areas by creating a wireless mesh communications solution.

Foundation for the Promotion of Industrial Quality and Technological Development of Galicia

The Foundation for the Promotion of Industrial Quality and Technological Development of Galicia was established in 1996 as a non-profit organisation by the Ministry of Innovation and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia and its mission is to promote, disseminate and implement policies within the scope of quality, technology and innovation in Galicia, Spain. Its main activities and specific expertise are: the promotion of activities for the industrial quality such as certification, inspection, audits, calibration; the promotion of activities related to the internationalisation of Galician SMEs; management and monitoring of European projects; the elaboration of studies and projects of development of sectors; planning and development of observatory activities in the fields of industrial promotion, Information society, excellence and business quality, internationalisation and the management of technology infrastructures,

East Midlands network Ltd

EMNET has over ten years experience promoting the adoption of new technology through working with networks and stakeholders at a strategic and practical level. EMNET has an established track record of translating the benefits of new technologies into practical use by SMEs including the creation of exemplars, demonstrations and dissemination through clusters. This includes the development of training and seminar programmes. EMNET’s expertise as an ISP and provider of design and development services to clusters and communities of SMEs is helpful promoting new ideas and technologies.

EMNET worked closely with BCU in the deployment of the DBE in the West Midlands, and introduced successfully also the DBE in the East Midlands.

Fundación para el Desarrollo de Ciencia y Tecnología en Extremadura

FUNDECYT has a central role in the economic, structural and innovation strategy development on Extremadura. Its main objective is to stimulate co-operation between firms, universities and public administrations in order to foster regional development. FUNDECYT works very closely with the regional government, supporting the development of the regional innovation and IST policymaking. It has been the main vehicle for the implementation of the eExtremadura project.

FUNDECYT has co-ordinated and participated on trans-regional and co-operative projects (INTERREG), technology transfer projects (IV, V and VI Framework Programme), educational projects (LEONARDO DA VINCI) and RIS projects.

Stichting Living Lab

Living LAB encompasses a network of entrepreneurs, educational facilities (including Leiden University), research institutes and government. Living LAB acts as a platform within that network, bridging researchers and entrepreneurs and facilitating innovation through collaboration and knowledge exchange. Living LAB’s mission is to facilitate open innovation and stimulate networking and collaboration as important tools of innovation. As such, the Living LAB is part of the larger network of Knowledge Workers Living Labs, represented also by the European Network of Living Labs.

Within DEN4DEK, Living LAB is interested in studying the possibility to attach the approach of the Living Labs to the applications layer of the Digital Ecosystem.

Polo Cientifico e Tecnológico da Madeira, Madeira Tecnopolo, SA

Madeira Tecnopolo (MT) is a private company mainly owned by the public sector. MT serves as a platform to stimulate and leverage local development in a few selected areas like IT and Tourism, Cultural content and Environment. MT has been responsible to create the Knowledge Society Strategy, implementation plans and operational management, which were the basis of the Madeira Regional policy. The Operational Programmes were designed using the Living Labas approach with very close public-private-partnerships and involving all the major stakeholders.

The Living Lab of Madeira is coordinated by MT and is segmented at domain level (tourism, healthy food, rural development). However some of the services are of horizontal nature (organisational changes, collaboration, global markets, user-centric design, etc.), which will provide an ideal environment for the DEN4DEK competencies analysis, build-up and management.

Umbria Innovazione scarl

Umbria Innovazione (UMI) is a non-profit organisation, created by the local body of the Region of Umbria, together with private organisations, entrepreneurial associations, banks and individual companies. Its mission is to promote and generate innovation, competitiveness and development of the local economic and enterprise fabric. In the last three years, UMI has played a leading role in a number of European and regional projects to stimulate innovation and technology transfer; the work of these projects has involved about 20 academic spin-offs and over 360 SMEs in 88 cluster projects to improve product and process competitiveness.

UMI has served as the Umbrian node of the IRC Network since 1995; coordinates the EU Project EFFORT (part of the DBE projects cluster); and led two working groups in the Interreg Project RDAnet CEDA2. UMI is a core partner in the Nanofun-Poly Network of Excellence, and is a partner in the EU Project Ennovation-net.

ESI Tecnalia – Fundación European Software Institute

The European Software Institute (ESI) is a private technological centre and a non-profit foundation created in 1993 by the European Commission with the support of the Basque Government. ESI’s mission is to contribute to the development of the Information Society and increase industry competitiveness, by means of knowledge, innovation, continuous improvement and the promotion and dissemination of Information Technology. ESI has a long-lasting relationship with the Basque Development Agency, SPRI, a public organisation, which is in charge of the areas of international business affairs, business promotion, technological innovation and information society.
